Top 5 First Person Shooters That Aren’t Call of Du...

I think it’s safe to say that the first person shooter genre has been crowned the champion category for the Xbox 360. The popularity of the genre is of course thanks to the Modern Warfare franchise for roping in both hardcore gamers and otherwise – hell, even grandmothers and middle aged married couples find themselves making time for a little Call of Duty action! But what if we ignore the debatably awesome Modern Warfare franchise and come up with a list of top first person shooters that don’t seem to be such an obvious choice for first place? What would that list then look like? Let’s find out:

#5 Bulletstorm

Whether you’re a fan of the constant crude humour or not, there is no two ways about it – Bulletstorm is fun! There is nothing more satisfying than flinging an enemy sky high and blowing his brains out with an overpowered shotgun. Bulletstorm isn’t exactly the most challenging first person shooter out there, but it’s definitely one of the most entertaining. The mere fact that you’re rewarded for being so inventive with your kills, easily gives it reason to sit in this list of shooters.

#4 Crysis 2

A brilliant soundtrack by the legendary Hans Zimmer, a mixture of stealth gameplay with adrenaline fuelled gunfights and a story that doesn’t involve Russians taking over the world – what more could you really ask for?! Sure, Crysis 2 is much more linear in comparison to its predecessor, but the game oozes with that cinematic atmosphere we long for in this genre of gaming. With such a visually stunning game that manages to captivate you the moment you turn it on, there is no way I was leaving it off this list!

#3 Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Although it’s more of a first person shooter/role playing game hybrid than anything else, it still makes its way onto the list through technicalities. Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a game that allows the player to take the drivers seat instead of holding your hand. Set in a dark and gritty sci-fi world full of conspiracy and human augmentations, it’s not long before you’re drawn in by such an outstanding storyline. The games main attraction is the freedom you’re given. Each mission can be completed in a number of ways and your augmentation skill tree is a massive factor in this. Deus Ex makes it to third place by giving us something fresh and unique – more games like this please!

#2 Battlefield 3

I’m man enough to put such a risqué game at number two. Modern Warfare fans may slaughter me in the process, but Battlefield 3 is undeniably a great game! The graphics are groundbreaking, the multiplayer is one of the best the world has ever known and the campaign is chockablock with tense and thrilling moments. Sure, not everyone is a fan of the games campaign mode since it’s admittedly a little short and no-where near as James Bond as Modern Warfare 3! But even if you do so happen to dislike the campaign, it’s the multiplayer mode which really sells this game. Biased Modern Warfare fans definitely won’t agree with my decision to put such a worthy game in second place, but if you’re open minded with your shooters then you’ll easily see why.

Inside the action of Halo 3

#1 Halo 3

So here we have it! At first place it’s Halo 3, not just because it’s an Xbox exclusive, but because it’s frankly the best first person shooter to date. With a flawless online multiplayer that gives everyone the same weapon load-outs and doesn’t overpower skilled players, this game is the daddy of first person shooters. Admittedly the campaign is fairly short with a mildly entertaining story, but there is nothing like feeling Godly after you’ve finally beaten Legendary mode. The games main selling point isn’t its story or single player modes, it’s the mighty multiplayer modes which is forever growing despite its age. Halo 3 is ultimately a must-have for any Xbox 360 owner.

Alice: Madness Returns – Review

After eleven years little Alice returned for more insanity in the hell hole that is Wonderland. With the previous game American McGee’s Alice being so successful that you can now buy it on Xbox Live, the question is – did Alice: Madness Returns match up to it?

The Outline:

Set in a world just as macabre as the original, Alice fights to defeat the ‘doll maker’ and free a corrupted Wonderland. Of course things aren’t that simple since at the time of her Wonderland visions, Alice is receiving psychiatric treatment which in turn unravels a bigger mystery in the story! Much like the original game, Alice: Madness Returns has a story far from suitable for children and if on the off chance you grew up consumed by the happy-go-lucky fantasy by Lewis Carroll, be prepared for this whole new take on things!

The Action:

There is no denying that Alice: Madness Returns is a tight 3D platformer that offers far more entertainment than most in the genre. Falling off platforms will see you explode into butterflies and restart where you fell, whilst the very environment you’re in offers plenty of collectibles to upgrade your health and skills. Things are made even more entertaining by a tremendous combat system that sees you primarily using a vorpal blade and doing some mean melee damage with a hobby horse. You’ll also be able to shoot long range using a pepper grinder and an explosive teapot cannon. One mechanic in particular which nods its head to the classic story is the ability to shrink in size to discover secrets through keyholes. This adds a nice dash of exploration to the game, granting players more than just a linear path to follow.

The gameplay continues to keep things fresh by requiring different tactics to take down certain enemies and throwing in a nice selection of puzzles to solve for good measure. Unfortunately the side scrolling sections of the game seem more tedious than enjoyable, but with so many awesome elements in the game, you’ll barely bat an eyelid at them.

Image:

From the stylish 2D newsprint styled cutscenes to the dark and gloomy industrial worlds and plenty of imaginative environments, it’s hard not to let yourself become immersed in such a magical adventure. Admittedly, some textures do appear to be a little less polished than we’d all like, but the bursting colours and cartoonish character models soon make up for that. All in all, whilst the games Unreal Engine isn’t exactly pushing your Xbox 360’s capabilities, it’s still hard not to fall in love with such a drop dead gorgeous game.

Audio:

The guys at Spicy Horse definitely nailed the voice acting in this game. Whilst things do then tend to seem a little over the top, let’s not forget that Alice in Wonderland itself is made to feel over the top! The music easily creates tension in the atmosphere and at times it’s hard to stop playing since you’re so into the twisted scrapes and metallic sounds found in the immersive soundtrack. If those powerful drums that kick in when you enter a fight don’t grab your attention, then the eerie Hatter theme will!

The Final Word:

Alice: Madness Returns is a fantastic little addition to the Xbox 360’s platforming library. Whilst the in-game puzzles can grow a little repetitive after pulling so many levers and completing block puzzle after block puzzle, the mixture of hack and slash combat, skilful jumping and exploration of two different worlds easily keeps you playing. So if you’re after a lengthy adventure in a creative world that lets you settle in a dark and mysterious story, then Alice: Madness Return is exactly what you need!

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Review

Forget Fallout, forget Oblivion, in fact forget Bethesda’s God-awful, clunky and awkward track record altogether because Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is on a whole new level entirely. With the ability to attract both RPG fans and otherwise, Skyrim is a game that should have a warning sign attached to it, informing gamers that their social life as they know it is now officially over.

Storyline:

Allowing you to Construct your own story from the countless opportunities available is what Bethesda does best and although the game does have an underlying plot, it’s the ability to branch off and define your own tale which makes this game a masterpiece. Whether you want to read up on the long forgotten Red Eagle of The Fosworn, to then track him down and fight him for his blade, or follow the path of a dark Elf and discover a much more sinister story to the human one, the game allows just about every opportunity imaginable. With countless stories to unravel and allegiances to take, the fact that you’re a Dragonborn who must put an end to Alduin and his army of dragons plays only a small part to what the game has to offer! Skyrim truly is a world of possibility.

Once Your In The Game:

Do you want to vanquish a dragon from afar with your skill at archery? Or do you want to force it to land and show it what you’re made of with magic and powerful swordsmanship? Skyrim grants you the ability to develop your character just how you want and abandons the ugly traditional Elder Scrolls leveling system for a much simpler and gorgeous skill tree. As always, you’ll also become much stronger the more you use a specific armour type or weapon, adding realism and depth to the game, instead of linear Final Fantasy-esque upgrades.

Of course, this is all nothing compared to the incredibly awesome combat system that is no longer stiff and static like Oblivion was. Instead you’re given the chance to dual wield magic and make use of a fantastic favourites menu, all alongside the chance to absorb dragon souls and use powerful dragonborn abilities! As if that wasn’t awesome enough, combat is made even more dynamic with gruesome kill animations that see enemies feel the full force of your wrath.

Graphics:

Thankfully, Bethesda’s copy and paste level design has completely gone and instead you’re given a gorgeous hand crafted world filled with beautiful environments. Water looks to flow naturally, rain blows in the wind and trees move independently, all adding to the immersive nature of the game – and if traversing the picturesque snowy mountains doesn’t fill you with joy, then I’m not sure what will! Character models have also been taken a step further and now perform realistic actions during conversation. The Creation Engine did an astounding job of being able to take you from the world we live in and easily place us in the dragon ridden lands of Skyrim.

Sounds:

I challenge you to play this game and not feel compelled to search for its soundtrack on Youtube long after its completion. Whether it’s the Nordic chants and touches that grab you in a dragon battle, or the soothing sounds that fill your ears whilst you’re exploring the open world, it’s impossible not to fall in love with Skyrim’s soundtrack.

As for the voice acting – it’s awesome! Sure, a little repetitious at times, but NPC chit-chat in this game is like no other. You can easily become immersed in a secondary storyline, just from how passionate each character sounds. Bethesda really went all out in the voice acting department.

Downsides

Skyrim isn’t exactly a bug-free game and more often than not you’ll experience strange texture popping moments, horses that hilariously just disappear whilst riding them and AI that won’t get out of the way! Of course if you can work around the latter and see the humourous side to Skyrim’s shortcomings, then it’s near enough a flawless game.

Overall

Taking everything we could have possibly loved from Fallout 3 and vastly improving everything we hated in Oblivion, Skyrim is a quintessential RPG that raises the bar for this genre of game. Spend the money and but the original, and leave it out of your xbox 360 softmod collection. Dragon Age? What’s Dragon Age? Skyrim let’s you interact with NPC’s in realistic looking conversations, slay dragons, transform into werewolves and absorb its gorgeous soundtrack, all whilst following a compelling backbone plot and exploring an enormous open world. Game of the year? More like, game of the century!

7 Reasons to Be Glad You Own an Xbox 360

With so many consoles flooding the market today, sometimes you just have to take a step back and remember that leap you took from Playstation 2 to Xbox 360. Microsoft truly did bless us with an innovative console that has since paved the way for other ideas. Below are seven things all 360 gamers can be thankful for;

Console memory

Plugging a memory card into your console seems almost barbaric these days, but before the Xbox came along with its snazzy internal memory system, this is exactly how games were played. It’s now become a pre-requisite for a console to have a built in memory system capable of storing not only game data, but all kinds of media too! Gone are the days of deleting your old Wipeout save, to make room for your hefty Final Fantasy VII data.

Perfect control pads

Before the Xbox 360 controller stole the scene with its nicely placed buttons, perfectly placed analogue sticks and cozy hand grips, the closest thing to comfort was the Sega Dreamcast’s control pad! Now, thanks to an incredibly upgraded Xbox control pad design, playing games has never felt more right.

XBL

Thanks to Microsoft’s Xbox Live, online gaming is now a lot more than PC MMORPG’s and Counter Strike. With the ability to co-operatively play games with someone over 500 miles away, chat on MSN during a loading screen, download demos and stream media, online gaming has become almost a quintessential part of gaming – thanks Microsoft!

Halo

Thanks to Bungie’s Halo games, the Xbox 360 allowed the first person shooter genre to gain more recognition than what was limited to PC gamers. We’re now living in a world where Master Chief is able to attract a much wider audience, roping in more fans of the FPS genre. This in turn, has created a surge in popularity for the genre, giving games like Call of Duty and Battlefield a chance to shine. Remember guys, you’re playing Call of Duty because Halo allows it.

Kinect

Admittedly, Xbox wasn’t the first to dive into the world of motion sensor technology, but they were able to remove the barrier of a control pad and allow you to immerse yourself in a game like never before. Sure, games like Michael Jackson Experience and Kinectimals aren’t reason enough to buy into this revolutionary new wave of technology, but it won’t be long before games such as Mass Effect 3 storm into the future of gaming.

RPG’s

Once BioWare’s Knights of the Old Republic blew RPG fans away when it arrived on the original Xbox in 2003, it was time for the new age of western RPG’s. Realising the potential, games such as Elder Scrolls jumped from PC gaming to consoles, roping in a much wider audience. Now games like Mass Effect and Skyrim exist, simply because the Xbox kick started things. The days of linear JRPG’s are numbered.

Achievements

Implementing an achievement system was one of the best ideas the boys at Microsoft could’ve thought up! Instead of claiming to have finished a game on its hardest mode, you are now able to prove it. Achievements give gamers more reason to finish side quests, complete missions without taking damage or clear Green Hill Zone in under 60 seconds, but most of all, it gives games meaning!
